The five-year study has been published in the International Journal of Epidemiology and is based on data from over 378,253 people between the ages of 16-75 who live in Scotland.
The study suggests that cycling to work can help improve mental health to a great extent. The study was done on the people who work and live in the area of Edinburgh or Glasgow, were living one mile away from the cycle path, and did not have any prescriptions for ill mental health at the start of the study.
The results were shocking as they found after five years, there has been a reduction of around 15 percent of prescriptions for anxiety and depression in the people who use cycles to commute to their work as compared to those who use other means of transportation.
Using bicycles to go to work has a significant impact on women as compared to men as there has been seen more reduction in the mental health prescriptions of women than men. The research team behind this study has advised promoting active traveling to improve our infrastructure for a healthier life and mental health. Also, we should encourage people to prioritize bicycles more than other means of transportation.
